Although the historical King Arthur has been
identified as Arthur map Petr of Demetia (Dyfed), this Arthur does not
seem to have inspired the Arthurian legend. For that we have to
look to Arthur mac Aidan of Dal Riada. "Arturius - A Quest for
Camelot" by D.F. Carroll provides an
in
depth look at this Arthur and presents a number of theories.
Although I agree that this Arthur did more to inspire the
legends, he can not be the historical King Arthur of the Britons for
two reasons:
* Although the
son of a king, he never made it to king himself.
* He was not a
Briton but a Scot. Dal Riada was not included in the Briton
kingdoms described by Gildas.
