How and Why the Arthurian Legend Developed

Much is known about Arthurian legends but very little about Arthurian history.  The reasons I can identify for this are as follows:

*  Only two reliable texts survived the Dark Ages:  "De Excidio Britanniae"  - Concerning the Ruin of Britain, written by St Gildas, a Celtic monk, not later than AD 535, and the Irish Annals of Tigernach which is a log of events from AD 489 - AD 1178

*  Creation of unreliable texts

*  Creation of texts for political aims

* Excellent story telling from numerous imaginative authors
